no. 1972.    THE BLUEBIRD YEARS.  Donald Campbell and the Pursuit of Speed.  Arthur Knowles /Graham Beech.  2001 book on the Campbell water speed records which includes the whole of "With Campbell at Coniston" , the classic 1967 account by Knowles, plus accounts of the recovery of Bluebird's wreckage from Coniston in 2001 and new analysis of the crash from designer Ken Norris.  Illustrated throughout.  Softback in excellent condition. 6in x 8.5in. pp.189.  £18
no. 1971.    MARATHON IN THE DUST.  Innes Ireland.  1970.  The colourful description of the London/Sydney Marathon in 1970 when former Lotus formula 1 drivers, Innes Ireland and Mike Taylor drove a Mercedes-Benz 280SE.  Andrew Hedges was also in the car.   Innes won the first Grand Prix for Team Lotus (the US at Watkins Glen in 1961) and Mike Taylor was  the hapless Lotus privateer who was despatched to warn the pits that Stirling had crashed in practice at Spa in 1960.  Taylor's Lotus sheared a steering arm and HE crashed into trees, being badly injured and his absence was not noticed until the other drivers arrived back from the scene of Stirling's accident.  NB: cover llustration for reference only: this copy has no dustwrapper. no.1968.    GERMAN GRAND PRIX Programmes:   Three early 'seventies programmes for the GP.  A curious lack of imagination shown by the designers: The same cover art is used on all three and many of the ads are the same inside. The dates and race entry details are different however!  all are 6in x8in.

no.1960.    JAGUAR XJ220. Philip Porter. Osprey Publishing 1990. 1959.    NAPIER: THE FIRST TO WEAR THE GREEN. David Venables.  1998. Superb history of the Napier company's racing cars from the 1890s through to record breaking in the 30s and 40s. Great research and terrific pictures. Particularly good on the Napier-Railton record cars of John Cobb. Hardback with dustwrapper in very good condition.(stamped "damaged" inside but apart from some light corner bumping I can find none) 8.5in x 11in. pp.208  £45
1958.    THE HISTORY OF BROOKLANDS MOTOR COURSE. William Boddy.  . WB's epic history of The Track originally written in 1957. This is the revised edition published in 1979. Mind-boggling detail and The standard reference work on Brooklands. Each year of construction and competition from 1907 to 1939 has its own chapter and there are appendices and indexes on race results, cars, personalities etc. etc. Illustrated throughout. Various cuttings from magazines etc. are slipped between the pages and the previous owner has made a beautiful index to the photo plates (addressing a failing of the original book). 1957.    S.S.II.  & S.S.II CARS.  THE BIRTH OF THE JAGUAR LEGEND Allan Crouch.  This covers a highly significant period in the story of the development of Jaguar Cars from its origins in S.S. cars. The SS1 and SS2 models in 1931-1936 are covered in exhaustive details with both period and modern photographs, competition history and production details are all covered. 1956.    FAST WOMEN John Bullock.  . A terrific book on some of the earliest women racing drivers from Camille du Gast at the turn of the century through to the likes of Kay Petre, Margaret Allen, Mrs. Victor Bruce, Doreen Evans, 'Bill' Wisdom, Doreen Evans etc. etc. Detailed text and a nice section of period photographs. 1955.    TEN YEARS OF MOTORS AND MOTOR RACING. Charles Jarrott 1956.  . Originally published in 1906 this is the fourth edition of one of the seminal early motoring books by one of the pioneer racers. Jarrott competed in the Gordon Bennett Races as well as the great continental road races, including the (in)famous Paris Madrid race of 1903. illustrated with 34 photographs and 8 maps. Absolutely fascinating and deserving of its classic status, this is a very good copy of this rare book, Hardback with dustwrapper in superb condition. 5.5in x 8.5in   pp.297.    £65
1954.    GRAND PRIX BUGATTI. Hugh Conway.   First published in 1968, this is a lavish Bugatti Trust edition from 2004.  A beautiful book filled with exhaustive researched detail and fabulous period photographs. 1950.   GORDON BENNETT RACES, The. Lord Montagu.    1963 first edition.  All the early races covered in depth:  1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1905 and 1906-1929 as a racing round-up.    Appendices cover the Gordon Bennett races 1900-1905, Technical details of the competing cars  1900-1905, the Gordon Bennett Aeronautical Cup 1906-1929 and the Gordon Bennett Aviation Cup 1909-1920. This copy is nice because the previous owner has inserted various cuttings from magazines etc. as bookmarks. 1949.    SINGLE CYLINDER DE DION BOUTONS.    Profile Publications booklet (no.25) Packed with information and period photos these are always good, but this one is particularly fine. 1948.    MY MOTORING REMEMISCENCES. S.F. Edge.    1972 edition of Edge's 1934 account of his life with cars, from being one of the pioneers on the first London-Brighton, competing in the Gordon Bennett Races and driving for England on his Napier. Amazing to read  a personal account of motoring in the nineteenth century as well as the glory years before Brooklands and through to the 'thirties.  Highly collectable. Hardback in very good condition with dustwrapper (faded spine but otherwise excellent) in protective sleeve. 6in x 9in. pp.272. £85
1947.    MEMORIES OF MEN AND MOTOR CARS. S.C.H. Davis.    1965. Part history of motoring and motor racing, part autobiography, this is a classic staple of a motoring library by "sammy" davis, ex Bentley Boy and former editor of the 'Autocar. 1946.    THE DONINGTON COLLLECTION.    The very first catalogue, researched by Doug Nye and Denis Jenkinson. A brief biography of  Tom Wheatcroft, history of the circuit and descriptions and photos of the collection of single-seater racing cars which formed the basis of the museum in its earliest days. 1945.    BENTLEY FACTORY CARS 1919-1931. Michael Hay.    1993 first edition of the classic companion volume to Hay's  "The Vintage Years" This covers the history of the defining era at Cricklewood when Bentley were at their height. A huge amount of original material, deep research and interviews with surviving personalities, with access to previously unseen pictures and blueprints. 1943.    MALCOLM CAMPBELL / MG.    A nice colour print showing Malcolm Campbell at Brooklands on an MG. The facsimile caption says "To "Rim"(?) with my very best wishes. Malcolm Campbell. J.C.C. 1941.    THE CERTAIN SOUND -Thirty Years of Motor Racing.    John Wyer.. Autobiographical account of Wyer's career as racing team manager to Aston Martin, Ford and Porsche and his involvement with the Ford GT40 and Gulf., most famously at Le Mans. 1938.    ROLLS-ROYCE: Hives, The Quiet Tiger.   Alec Harvey-Bailey.  Henry Royce Memorial Foundation publication on the life and work of  Lord hives, who drove in the 1907-08 Scottish Trials and worked for R-R from 1908, becoming head of the experimental department, having a great deal of influence on the marine and aero engines.  Softback in very good condition (small mark on back cover) 6in x 8in approx. pp. 101  £20
1937.    DAN GURNEY - THE ULTIMATE RACER.    Karl Ludvigsen 2000. Haynes published biography of Dan Gurney by respected author Ludvigsen who first met Gurney in 1958. Lavishly illustrated in both B&W and colour.  Hardback with dustwrapper in excellent condition.10in x 10in. pp.208
1936.    BONNEVILLE SPEED WEEK 2001.    A fabulous poster for the annual week of record breaking on the salt flats in August.  Also includes the dates for the 'World Finals' in October.  A wonderful piece of Americana and very redolent of the atmosphere of the event. 18in x 23.5in. poster in superb unused condition.  £100
1935.    ROLLS-ROYCE ENTHUSIASTS' CLUB YEARBOOK 2010.    A lavish, hefty tome produced for the RREC.  Lots of the sort of 'lifestyle articles you'd expect in expensive magazines but there's some great historic R-R and Bentley content too, drawing on the club's own archives.  Not normally sold outside the club.  Hardback in good condition (one corner bumped) with very good dustwrapper. 10in x10in. pp.429  £14

1934.    AMATEUR RACING DRIVER  T.P Cholmondeley Tapper.    The splendidly named Thomas Pitt Cholmondeley-Tapper was New Zealand's first motor racing hero, bought Earl Howe's Maserati grand prix car and raced succesfully in the 'thirties, being offered a Mercedes test drive and participating in the 1936 German Grand Prix.  This book is a detailed account of his exploits and a great record of pre-war British and continental motor sport.  I can offer two editions, both from the colection of Pauline Mayman and signed by her on the flyleaf in each case:

1933.    TYRRELL F1 MODEL.    A diecast model by Minichamps in 1:43 scale. Iin immaculate condition in the original display box/case. Car is approx 4 inches long and complete with all sponsor decals, driver with correct helmet colours etc.

1932.    PARNELL BRM V8.    Press photo with attached caption of "A new £12,000 British Sports Racing car, planned for international events...."  The story goes that after Reg Parnell's death, the Climax engined RP64 F1 car project was halted, and the designer, Les Redmond charged with turning the car into a sports racer. -sounds difficult! 9.5in x 6in original press print from Raymonds of Derby in good condition with typed caption sheets stuck to the back. £23
1931.    AUDI / AUTO UNION.    Promotional poster for the Audi Quattro from 1983showing it side by side with the C-Type Auto Union of 1936. Originally presented with 'Classic & Sportscar magazine' and quarter folded for original insertion. Very good clean condition. £8
1930.    BENTLEY /LE MANS Photographs.    The no. 3 car in action and the team cars in an improvised preparation area in a local hotel courtyard. Two sepia-brown tone prints on photographic paper (from copy negs but good quality) some creases from being rolled but should mount well. Images are 9.5in x 14 in not including borders. 1927.    RACING STEWART  The Birth of a Grand Prix Team.    1997 book by Maurice Hamilton and John Nicholson on the short-lived Stewart Grand Prix venture. Beautiful photography throughout and detailed expertly researched text. Foreword by Jackie Stewart. 1925.    CASTROL ACHIEVEMENTS 1961.   Gordon Horner artworkof Anne Hall's rally Anglia, John Whitmore in a Jaguar (inside), plus Tom Philips and Max Deubel images on the back covers. 6in x 9in approx softcover book in excellent condition. pp.48    £25
1924.    THE B.R.M. STORY.    A flexi-disc (remember those?) 45rpm record presented with 'Classic & Sportscar' magazine in 1983.  £8
1922.    PORSCHE 911 GT1 LE MANS(1998).    Maisto Diescast model in 1/18 scale of the car driven by Alzen, Muller and Wollek in the 1998 24 Hours.  A beautiful heavy thing with opening doors, removeable engine cover, detailed interior, working steering etc. In excellent clean condition (one mirror missing). £20
1921.    BUGATTI : International Magazine of Automobiles and other objets d'art. . English Edition March 1992. The majority of this volume covers the EB110 supercar, with coverage of the launch, technical and design articles etc. There is also material on the 'other Bugattis: Carlo and Jean , and articles on wheels, Nuvolari, a Dutch vintage rally, the Bologna motor show etc. etc. Hardback in excellent condition (originally distributed with no dustwrapper) 13in x 9in. pp.80 £25
1920.    NINE LIVES PLUS. The Hon. Mrs. Victor Bruce 1977.  Autobiographical account of "Record Breaking on Land, Sea and In The Air"  Mrs Bruce raced at Brooklands, won a Coupe de Dames in the Monte Carlo Rally, flew singlehanded to Japan, set powerboat records etc. etc. Exhausting to read!  Illustrated hardback in excellent condition 5.5in x 8.5in. pp. 192  £20

1917.    ALAIN PROST. Life In The Fast Lane. 1990.  If you've seen the recent "Senna' film you'll know why this is an excellent companion (though that's possibly not the best word!) volume to the Senna titles here.  Autobiographical account of "the Professor's' career translated from the French. Excellent insider insight into 1980s F1.  Softcover book in very good condition. 6in x 9in pp.189 £20
1916.    MEN AT THE WHEEL Peter Miller 1963.  A series of profiles and biographies of  twenty five drivers of the early 1960s , complete with contemporary photographs by the cream of the photographers of the period: Michael Cooper, Bernard cashier, Edward Eves, Geoff Goddard etc. etc. Hardback with dustwrapper in excellent condition. 7.5 in x 10in. pp. 128  £20

1914.    GRAND PRIX DE MONACO. Rainer Schlegelmilch and Harmut Lehbrink.  A huge tome from legendary photographer Shlegelmilch. Covers the complete history of the race from 1929 to 1998. A beautiful evocation of the races with erudite text to match. See the sample spreads opposite.  English /German /French triple text. 1913.   E-TYPE JAGUAR by Lesney  'Matchbox' diecast model car (no. 32) made in the early 1960s and finished in metallic red. Pretty good condition: The paint has a few chips but it's otherwise clean and intact. about 2.5in long. £20
1911.    THE SCHLUMPF OBSESSION. Denis Jenkinson and Peter Verstappen. Don't be put off  by the rather cheap BCA design: This is a serious history of one of the most extraordinary car collections ever assembled, shrouded in almost complete secrecy until 1977 when in a dramatic series of events its unbelievable treasures were revealed. The full history of the reclusive Schlumpf brothers and their private museum is told by expert authors, including the discovery, the setting up of the museum and the infamous occasion when the disgruntled workers torched a car in the courtyard among many others. 1909.    ALFA ROMEO HUB CAP  An amazing flying saucer-like thing which has been decorating the wall here for ages. I'm not sure which model Alfa it came from. Stainless steel (I think) with plastic Alfa logo ring. One smallish scratch to the centre may well polish out. 10" in diameter. £25.
1908.    1927 STUTZ BLACK HAWK  1/24 scale diecast model by Danbury Mint.  Superbly detailed with opening, double hinged bonnet covers, opening doors, working steering etc. In excellent condition (missing the bonnet mascot and one door step but otherwise as new) Supplied in the original box. 8" long. £45
1907    PORSCHE GUIDE by SLONIGER.  1958 US publication by noted Porsche expert and aimed at the serious Porsche owner rather than just the armchair enthusiast. History of the company, Tuning and extras (including supercharging), strengths and weaknesses, plus track use (including diagrams on cornering technique) Fascinating.  Softback in good condition (a little very light water staining to the edge of some pages) 5in x 8in pp.128  £22
1906.    ROLLS-ROYCE  1925 -39 MANUAL.  c1950.  John Haynes.  This may be the first-ever technical tome produced by the now-famous Haynes publishing group.  Basic printing and reproduction of photographs and drawings but remember this is a first! Acknowledgements include the Science Museum and Rolls-Royce themselves. Slightly grubby cover but very good inside  8x5in.  Softback.  Pp.101  £40
1905.    SUNBEAM CENTENARY 1899-1999. A programme for the Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq register rally at Weston Park & Wolverhampton. Good history of Sunbeam company and timeline of significant dates. 1902.    A  CLASSIC WORLD & WHEN THE ENGINE ROARS.  George Begg. 1999.  This is the rare large format glossy autobiography of George Begg covering his years on motorcycles and then building his own racing cars in the manner of a latter-day Bruce McLaren.  It was updated by George to include his detailed coverage of historic cars that had raced in New Zealand including the Sunbeams raced by C.W.F. 1898.    GRAND PRIX - BARRE LYNDON 1935. First Edition Another 'standard work' along with his "Combat' and 'Circuit Dust' this is the best and the rarest of the Lyndon books. Colour illustrated frontispiece, foreword by Earl Howe, epilogue by Cecil Kimber. Lots of black and white photographic illustrations. This has led a hard life over the last 75 years, with a worn and rubbed cover and some (careful) repairs to the spine and a loose frontispiece but the binding is good and the pages are clean. pp. 264  £45

1895.    RENE DREYFUS – My Two Lives – Race Driver to Restaurateur.  Limited numbered edition 324/1000.  The autobiography of the French Bugatti driver who won the second Monaco Grand Prix in 1930.  Later raced Alfa Romeo for Ferrari and Delahaye.  After WW2 Rene ran Le Chanteclair restaurant in New York.  I used to dine with Rene in Monaco and went to New York for the launch of his book.  Signed by Rene Dreyfus and personally numbered. 1868.    BUGATTI EB110 model kit.  Unmade new Revell 1:24 scale kit of the EB110 supercar. All parts are still sealed in their bags and while the box has got some rubbing marks at the corners it's otherwise as new, with the instruction sheet etc. Finished model length is 183mm or just over 7" apparently.  £20

1843.    TINPLATE GARAGE AND BUS.  A delightful toy made most likely in the late 50s/early 60s. The "Auto'-Matic" garage is missing its door but otherwise is in great shape. No manufacturer's mark but it says "G.T.P. 584" on the side.  The matching bus ("GTP Tours") has a bit of rubbing  on the corners and a rust spot on one side but it's still on the side of patina rather than damage. As well as author David Weguelin, editors include Narisa Chakrabongse, Peter Hull, Denis Jenkinson and Patrick Marsh so it's as authoritative as you could wish for.  A huge tome of 288 pages, profusely illustrated with more than 500 pictures; not only period photographs but race posters, blueprints, magazine articles etc. Full race results included as well as detailed chapters on each individual car and its current (in 1980) owner with historic racing and hillclimbing records added. This set a new standard for racing histories. 1784. LE MANS POSTER 1974. This is a genuine original poster and not a reproduction. It's been professionally mounted on linen which means that it's in perfect condition with no creases, tears or other damage. If you've not come across this method of preserving artwork, the paper is permanently bonded to a heavy linen material which extends about 1 inch beyond the edges and makes the whole thing much more robust and resistant to damage. Poster size is 15.5in x 23.5in. £175

1783.  MOTOR RACE GAME. "A journey of 440 miles from Edinburgh to London with incidents en route" Board game with hazards such as punctures, collisions and being arrested for "scorching" between Coventry and Oxford.  My favourite has to be the segment marked "Precipice- Killed - out of the game" !   This has been professionally framed under glass so I've no idea what's on the other side of the board.  Also included is a set of six painted lead cars which fit on the segments so you can play the game as well as hanging it on the wall. . No date but I'd guess 1920s from the artwork. Frame is approx. 18in x 12in. £160

1782.    FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONS POSTERS.  A pair of posters produced by Goodyear in the 1990s. The first shows Hulme, Fittipaldi, Lauda, Andretti, Piquet and Rosberg.  The second features Brabham, Stewart, Hunt, Jones, Prost, Senna and Mansell.

1781.  FORMULA ONE CHAMIONSHIP POSTAL COVERS 1977. An amazing boxed set of covers from all the rounds of the 1977 championship, stamped and franked from the date of the race (or the following day depending on the country's postal system). The race winner was printed on the cover so they couldn't be released until the chequered flag had fallen. Each cover contains a sheet giving the full race classification. Numbered limited edition, presented in a slipcase- covered custom ring binder from 'Autocar' so it's all in excellent condition. £195

1761.    BASILDON RETRO 1997.    An extraordinary event, which has now passed into legend, the Basildon Retro was the brainchild of Canon Webber, Chaplain to the BRDC to raise money for a the local church bell tower. An amazing collection of cars from 8-litre CanAm Mclaren to V16 BRM took part, with drivers such as Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks, Chris Amon and Derek Bell driving on a (just about) closed-off road course round the town.  The sight of '60s F1 cars sharing a roundabout with bemused Essex shoppers was surreal. Another highlight  is Canon Webber's wonderful driver's briefing (after the policeman's safety briefing he offers to marry his parents for him!)  Not available on DVD so this is a rarity.  45min. 1747.    BRDC / SILVERSTONE PLAQUE. Like the paperweight above this was produced to celebrate Silverstone's 50th anniversary in 1998, though I'm not quite sure what it's for. It would certainly keep papers flat as it's good and heavy.  Pewter-type metal outline of the circuit with the corners named and beautiful relief models of what I guess are the 1948 and 1998 winning cars, all mounted on a wooden base with a BRDC shield in the corner.  5in x 7in overall. "Terza Editione" paper belly-band on cover is removable. Accompanied by a slim softback on muscular dystrophy with a foreword by Enzo Ferrari (Enzo's son Dino died of the disease aged only 24). 1675.    WOLSELEY GYROSCOPE. A magnificently bonkers vehicle, the Gyroscope dates from 'approx 1910-11' according to the pencilled caption on the back. The bowler-hatted gent looks more confident than his chauffeur while the two rear passengers seem worried to say the least! Wonderful.  Sadly the original press caption has been removed but it retains the stamp of the Wolseley Motors Ltd. photo publicity dept. 1668.    SEARS/AMON COBRA CLASH. A 7.5in x 6in B&W photograph of Jack Sears in the Willment Cobra leading Chris Amon in the Tommy Atkins Cobra at Brands Hatch in 1965. Sears won by just 1.4sec. 'Motor Racing': "A wonderful dice with the massively built cars drifting very smoothly on their fat Goodyears, Sears seeming to have the edge on steam out of the corners, and Amon closing up on braking,. A great dice, from which a dead heat would have been a fitting verdict." Amon had bloodied palms after the race having blistered them in the Nurburgring 1000km race earlier in the weekend. signed by Jack Sears and Chris Amon. £90

1534.    FRENCH GRAND PRIX 1967. Poster for the 53rd Grand Prix de l'ACF, held at Le Mans for only the third time in its history (1906 and 1921 being the previous occasions) The Circuit Bugatti was a purpose-built track inside the 24 hour course, using none of the public road sections but including several hairpin bends. It was unpopular with the drivers and spectator numbers were low, so F1 never returned to the Sarthe. 23.5in x16in poster with very light quarter folds from original mailing, clean and free from tears etc. Rare. £100

Editorial explains that the original decision was to suspend publication until motor racing resumed but due to the number of reader's requests to continue they had decided to publish in this 'austerity' form. "on this note we present our October issue as yet another, if insignificant challenge to a fanatic called Hitler". Short 8-page issue does manage to include accounts of vintage meetings and the news of John Cobb's Land Speed Record of 368.85mph at Bonneville. 8.5in x 11in item in very good condition. £35

1487.    MANSELL/WILLIAMS F1 Model Kit.  Tamiya kit in giant 1:12 scale of Nigel Mansell's FW14B "Red 5" car which took him to the championship in 1992- or you could build Ricardo Patrese's car if you prefer. Produced with the help and approval of Williams GP Engineering this has a breathtaking level of detail, with working steering and suspension, rubber tyres, cables etc. on the fully modelled engine. Removable cowling shows the 'works' with the carbon fibre effect clearly visible. Many metal parts make it strong and accurate. Hundreds of parts- everything still sealed in the original bags so nothing is missing. Finished model is 11in (355mm) long and 7in  (180mm) wide. £95

Jaguar powered cars such as Coopers, Tojeiros and of course Listers are also included. Every model variant has its own description, specifications and photo. There is also a section on the history of the company and a good index. Intended primarily as a reference work it is filled with anecdotes and asides, as well as unusual photos which make it an interesting just to browse. 1478.    AUTOCOURSE 1975/76 . International Motor Racing and Rallying Review but most people collect these for the Formula One content which is superbly detailed. Every race of the 1975 season is covered in detail with photos and statistics as well as off-track action. There's a photo on page 119 captioned "Elf PR man and journalist Eoin Young does the Haka- not a pretty sight!" 1463.    CORGI  JAGUAR MODELS.  Two nice diecast 2.4 model Jaguars, both have a fair amount of patina, meaning they have been played with extensively. They could easily be restored with a respray but wouldn't that be sacrilege? Both are just under 4 inches long and have all wheels and tyres in good condition.

1417.    VINTAGE CAR RACING MEDALS. Made of a kind of silvery pewter type metal showing pair of 20's/30's race cars in relief. The rear shows a wreath of oak leaves and a space for engraving the name of the event or winner etc.
Small medal is 1 inch (25mm) in diameter with attaching loop and ring. Larger one is 1.5in (38mm) in diameter. both are in excellent condition and supplied in card boxes.

Fully updated to include such cars as the Mini, Hillman Minx, Triumph 2000 etc. as well as contemporary road signs, regulations and conditions. 1406.    LOUIS BLERIOT. Three beautifully printed engravings with embossed and gilded detailing all in perfect condition. Similar in style to the labels you find on cigar boxes so that's what I guess they are. Full colour portrait of the pioneer aviator with "Douvres Calais" and "Juillet 1909" and scenes of the historic cross-channel flight on each. Wonderful.  The largest image is 7in x 5in approx. £60 set of three.
