| 1545. THE
KINGS OF THE ROAD. K.W. Purdy. 1952. "This
is not only a book for the lover of the antique or eccentric, the
unashamedly big and fast car: it is a tribute to the European tradition
of engineering and styling from an author disgruntled with the "mouth
organ" and "flaccid beetle" style that has spread
over the world from his native America." Covers the Grandes
Marques such as Bugatti, Mercer, Duesenberg, Mercedes, Hispano-Suiza,
Rolls-Royce etc. but also MG, Morgan, Jaguar and others. Chapters
on Nuvolari, Le Mans, Indianapolis, Vanderbilt Cup etc. etc. interesting
and eclectic with good illustrations. Hardback with dustwrapper

tome covering all aspects of maintenance as well as "special
tuning for trials work" including the official booklets, Supercharger

| 1542. THE
RACING COOPERS. /
FANGIO. Arthur Owen 1959 1st edition. Highly detailed early
book on Coopers which is particularly strong on 500s and record
breakers but the sports cars etc. are also well covered. Excellent
illustrations. Preface by Charles and John Cooper, Foreword by
Stirling Moss. A rare book made unique by having been signed
in pencil on the flyleaf by Juan Manuel Fangio. The dedication
reads "Salute BRM!, Fangio '54" The date anomaly being
(presumably) explained by this photo from page 85 showing him alongside
Eric Brandon and Alan Brown at Goodwood. Fangio was waiting
for his new BRM and John Cooper actually offered him a drive should
it fail to appear. Most taken with the car, he drove it in the
Chichester Cup race but it suffered a misfire. The date though
was 1952 so it looks as if his memory was a couple of years out.
Hardback in OK condition (no D/W, pages slightly foxed, cover boards
rubbed) 5.5in x 8.75in pp.243 £155 |

event." The '64 and '65 event successes are covered
