1396.    CHEVROLET / DESERT ENCOUNTER. Knud Holmboe. 1936 English edition of the 1931 book by a sort of Danish 'Lawrence of Arabia' who conceived of driving a 1928 Chevrolet through North Africa to study Arab culture. He encountered dreadful privations becoming lost in the desert and getting captured by both Arab and Italian forces. He doesn't shrink from portraying the brutality of the times in words and pictures. Good hardback with rather crumbly dustwrapper. 5.5in x 9in.  60 photographs "taken by the author under great difficulties with a small camera" pp.282  £35
1395.    AMERICAN MOTORTOYS.   Lillian Gottschalk 1986.  A lavishly produced tome which acts as a comprehensive guide to commercially made motoring toys from about 1894 to1942. Hundreds of model cars and trucks in cast iron, tinplate, pressed steel etc. form the majority but games, garages, bridges etc. are also covered. Detailed information and photographs (colour and B&W) throughout, plus sections on restoration and repair, manufacturer histories etc. 11in x 11.5in. hardback with dustwrapper in superb condition (perfect but for one corner wrinkle) pp.328.   £35
1394.    AUTOMOVIL CLUB DE PORTO RICO.  An embroidered cloth patch type badge for race overalls etc. Excellent unused condition. 3.5in (9cm) in diameter.  £25
1392.    AYRTON SENNA. 'Audiosport' double cassette pack telling the story of Senna's life from priviledged childhood in Brazil to his triumphs, his death and the aftermath - including the court case. Over 150 minutes of powerful narration and sounds which capture the atmosphere of Formula One racing. Written by Senna expert and biographer Christopher Hilton. Narrated by Julian Harries. Includes Chris Rea's song dedicated to Ayrton; "Saudade" Excellent condition. £20

1391. ROLLS-ROYCE / CLAUDE JOHNSTON. 1926.  Privately published colllection of tributes to "C.J." who was the first secretary of the Royal Automobile Club and effective creator of Rolls-Royce. As its secretary and later managing director he balanced the talents of Royce, the doughty engineer and Rolls the racing driver, aviator and salesman.  See the excellent biography by W.J. Oldham; "The Hyphen in Rolls-Royce" which sums up his role perfectly. Soft covers with portrait print on inside page.  Water damage to bottom corner is extensive but doesn't affect the legibility of the text of this extremely rare item.  (more detailed pictures on request) 9in x 11in. pp.23 £125

1388.    MOTORACES. George Monkhouse. 1936 First edition of the original Newnes edition of this seminal motor racing photography book. The author was the UK Kodak representative with a passion for Grands Prix and photography and the publication of this book led directly to an invitation from Mercedes to accompany their team in subsequent seasons, leading to more wonderful photographs and the equally famous "Motor Racing With Mercedes-Benz" also listed here.  Hardback with silver-gilt lettering to spine and some rubbing to the corners. No dustwrapper (I'm not sure if this book was published with one) Some foxing to the pages. Dedicated to Richard Seaman who contributes an introduction.  Appendix of tables of Grand Prix, Voiturette and Sports Car race results 1934-1936.  Picture shows the title page. 1363.    CORVETTE, FERRARI, MERCEDES, PORSCHE. Four For The Road. Henry Rasmussen. 1989.   Four books (the 'Survivors Series') combined in one volume. Originally published as 'Ferraris for the Road', 'Corvettes for the Road' etc.  This makes for an impressve tome. Lavish photography (as you'd expect from Rasmussen) of a huge variety of models but also historical background and terrific archive pictures of production, racing, period publicity shots etc. Worthwhile as a marque book for any one of the four covered with the others as a bonus - superb. over 950 photographs, 500 in colour. 11in x 9 in c600page hardback in excellent condition with similar dustwapper in protective sleeve. £35  
1362.    BRDC YEARBOOK. 1967.  A nice little  pocket sized hardback from the BRDC with membership lists, lap records, major race results for 1966 and racing calendar for 1967 plus articles on the club and a great selection of archive photos from the 'thirties onwards.  £18
1354.    FLAT 12. The Racing Career of Ferrari's 3-litre Grand Prix and Sports Cars. Alan Henry. 1981 first edition. Terrific history of some of the best-sounding racing cars of all time, with photographs throughout.  Foreword by Niki Lauda. Hardback with dustwrapper in as-new condition. 7.5in x 10in. pp.144.    £22
1353.    UNSAFE ANT ANY SPEED. Ralph Nader. 1965.  The legendary  thesis on the "designed-In dangers of the American Automobile", with particular emphasis on the Corvair and its notorious tendency to kill its occupants. A hugely influential book which probably did more to transform the way cars are built than any other.  Hardback with dustwrapper in excellent condition. (owner has written his name on the flyleaf, slight foxing to the edges of the pages). 6in x 8in approx. pp. 365   £24
1352.    WE AT PORSCHE. Ferry Porsche & John Bentley.  Autobiography of Dr. Ing. h.c. Ferry Porsche  which is also of course, an excellent history of the company. Published in 1976. 1350.    MESSERSCHMITT CABIN SCOOTER Owners' Manual . This is in a bit of a state but it's a rare item;  an English-language original manual for  The Messerschmitt Cabin Scooter ("Kabinenroller") This covers the KR200 model, the "Sport" and 'Roadster versions and the splendidly named 'Cabrio-Limousine'.  Total technical detail on all aspects of care and maintenance, as well as  Service coupons services every 300 miles up to 60,000. Sachs engine guarantee card etc. Full engine, gearbox etc. stripdown/rebuild data, photos, diagrams.  An essential item for anyone who owns one of these glorious devices. The front cover is well-covered in workshop grime and the pages inside have absorbed quite a bit of oil, but every page is legible. Back cover missing. £55
1348.    ADVENTURER'S ROAD.  The Story of the 1907 Pekin - Paris Road Trial and the 1908 New York - Paris Motor Race. T.R. Nicholson. 1957 1st edition.  Two of the most famous epic early motor competitions in one volume.  Lots of photographs accompany the text. Hardback in good clean condition (dustwrapper only slightly frayed at the edges) 5.5in x 9 in approx. pp. 235 £28 
1341.    UP TO SPEED – The Roycroft years in New Zealand motor racing.  Scott Thomson.  2006.  Hardback collector’s edition of only 100 copies (regular editions are softback).  Cover action photo of Ron Roycroft at speed in his famous 4.5-litre Ferrari –the actual car Gonzalez drove to win the first GP for Ferrari at Silverstone in 1951.  Roycroft raced the Nuvolari P3 Alfa Romeo plus various Bugattis in New Zealand but his most famous car was the big V12 Ferrari GP machine.  Large format (10.5x8.5-inches) with a wealth of photographs, many I’ve never seen before.  Foreword by Chris Amon.    395 pages.  SIGNED BY AUTHOR SCOTT THOMSON   £85
1340.    BRONZE NUVOLARI-STYLE KEYRING.  Presented to competitors at the 2003 Classic Speedfest at Teretonga in New Zealand, the world’s southernmost circuit.  Sideview image of vintage driver in single-seater cockpit.  Lettering on reverse.  £25
1337.   CECIL B. DeMILLE and CUNNINGHAM. A wonderful publicity photo from Paramount Pictures showing the film director  in magnificent tweeds/plus fours  posing with his custom-built Cunningham ("Five Wheels Long")  8 x10in original photo in good condition apart from a crease across the foreground. Caption info on the back. £30
1335.    COLIN CHAPMAN The Man And his Cars. The Authorised Biography. Gerard ('Jabby') Crombac. 1986.  Foreword by Enzo Ferrari.  One of THE standard works which no Lotus collector should be without. Authoritative book by Jabby who was a close friend of Colin Chapman for many years. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of photos, many of them from private collections. A press cutting from 1997 on the death of Yahaya Amad who had saved Lotus in 1996 is neatly stuck inside the front cover. 7 x 9.5in Hardback with very good dustwrapper (corner price clipped). pp.383 £30
1332.    GILLES VILLENEUVE. The Life of the Legendary Racing Driver. Gerald Donaldson. 1989.  Superb biography of one of the most popular drivers of the 80s and certainly the most spectacular to watch. As Nigel Roebuck says "The crowds loved him because he, of all the men out there was so clearly working without a net" Colour photo section. Hardback in excellent condition with similarly perfect dustwrapper (in plastic protective sleeve.  6in x 9in. pp.352 £25
1330.    MINI.  Rob Goulding. A superb book on the history of the Mini from earliest concept through to production and racing. Cooper, Downton and competition models are covered as well as van, pick up and Moke derivatives, plus specials etc. etc. Lots of photographs and excellent historical anecdotes throughout make this one of the must have works in any Mini library. 1327.    TAZIO NUVOLARI/ INDIANAPOLIS. A great photograph of Tazio Nuvolari sitting in the Bowes Seal Fast Special. Captioned from writing on the neg (as all Indy photos seem to be) "Tazio Nuvolari Indianapolis Motor Speedway 1938"  Nuvolari had walked out on the Alfa team after his Tipo 308 caught fire at Pau and went on a long holiday to the USA with his wife. - This then is effectively a holiday snap!  Pin-sharp glossy print. 10in x8in.    £25
1323.    MERCEDES 1903 GORDON BENNETT Postcard. A rare item from what was the first ever British motor race and therefore over 100 years old. Captioned "Jenatzy's Good-Bye"  This shows The event winner Camile Jenatzy aboard his Mercedes "sixty" - A last minute substitute after a factory fire destroyed the  works 'nineties'.  Published by Hely's Limited, Dane St. Dublin. 5.5in x 3.5 in (14 x 9cm) good condition and unwritten. £65
1321. FORD MUSTANG. Randy Leffingwell 1995. Beautifully photographed book from acknowledged Mustang expert. Detailed history of the car from 1962 concept to 1990s versions including lots on the Shelby cars with a good balance of technical facts and anecdotes. period ads and even toys are also covered. 1319.    JENKS & NORTON SIDECAR OUTFIT.  A wonderful photo showing Denis Jenkinson refuelling a racing Norton sidecar combination from a War Sept. 1302.    STIRLING MOSS. "A Portrait of Britain's Greatest Racing Driver".  Riverside Records Sports Car Special (RLP 5004) re-issued a few years back as an audio CD. A long (50 min) interview with Stirling  a couple of days after his victory in the 1956 Nassau Trophy Race. The original LP sleeve notes are reproduced.  £15

1301.    CARROLL SHELBY. "The Career Of A Great American Driver".   1957 Riverside Records Sports Car Special (RLP 5006) re-issued a few years back as an audio CD. This takes the form of an interview covering all aspects of "Shel's" Career. Approx. 51 min long. The original LP sleeve notes are reproduced.  £15

1298.    SOUND STORIES ON CD.  The original Sound Stories documentary records are now very collectable and hard to find.  When I had a complete set of all nine of the original EPs I had them recorded onto a double CD. Note that these recordings were taken direct from old 45rpm records and therefore have the original crackles and pops, which adds to the 50s atmosphere!

1297.    BEADED WHEELS 1955-56 GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY EDITION. The way we were…  A fascinating facsimile copy of the first two years of the New Zealand Vintage Car Club’s magazine exactly as it appeared half a century ago.  There would probably have been a maximum of 100 copies printed for members of the emerging club and few single issues have survived, let alone the first two complete volumes as presented here in an elegant collector’s library edition with British Racing Green binding and gold titling.   £50
1294.    ITALIAN CARS. Short-lived magazine from the early 90s. Five very high quality magazines, Issues 1,2,3,4,5. perfect-bound so they feel almost like paperback books. Articles on Ferraris, Maseratis, Alfas, Oscas etc. as you'd expect but also historical features on the likes of Nuvolari and Ascari with some beautiful period photos. Each copy is A4 Approx / 8.5 x 11.5in  and 80 or 96 pages. As a complete set: £40
1293.    BRABHAM  F1 TEAM. Glossy brochure from 1985 aimed at attracting sponsors. Nice pictures of the BT54 GP car in action, the team personnel (including Bernie Ecclestone of course) etc. Interesting rare item in mint condition with matching blue Brabham logo envelope. Double sided, three section item on heavy gloss card opens out to 11.5 x 24.5 in. £25

1288a: A Christmas card from "Johnny and Nelly Lurani Cernuschi" in the form of a postcard showing Sr. Lurani in his 1971 Maserati "Indy" in front of (presumably) his Italian Villa. 6in x 4 in  £22

1287.    MORRIS - MG - RILEY - WOLSELEY  Ashtray.   A nice ashtray in aluminium made by Seluart of Worcester. Engraved with the names of Morris, MG, Riley and Wolseley and a fine decorative pattern of wavy and cris cross lines. Presumably from a dealership office. 4.5in across. £30
1284.    TYRRELL TEAM LIGHTER.  A matchbox- sized refillable gas lighter promoting the Grosser Preis von Europa  - the August F1 race at the Nurburgring in 1974.  Race date and F1 Elf Tyrrell  car artwork on both sides. Complete in original box (with same artwork) and instruction leaflet.    £20
1283.    TYRRELL TEAM BADGE.  Chrome and blue enamel lapel badge bearing the logotype of Ripley's finest, the Tyrrell Racing Organisation. Excellent condition with safety pin type fixing. 31mm x 16mm / 1.25in x 0.5in approx.   £15
1279.    MOTORS AND MOTORING 1916. Professor H. J. Spooner. Every aspect of motor car operation in the typical exhaustive detail you get from this period. Diagrams  of engines, gearboxes etc. as you'd expect but also things like a 'petrol rectifying still'  and copies of City Guilds motor car technology examination papers. Fascinating item for any veteran car library. Hardback in superb condition.  5in x 7in pp.326    £24

1277b.    COOPER CARS.  Doug Nye. 1987 updated edition of this seminal work on Charles and John Cooper's Surbiton garage which changed the face of motor racing. Superb comprehensive text with 26 chapters of Nye's typically well researched and anecdote-filled writing, plus appendices and over 300 photographs. This is THE Cooper book. 1273.    MY TWO LIVES.  Rene Dreyfus.  1983.  Dreyfus autobiography written with Beverly Rae Kimes.  SIGNED BY DREYFUS IN A NUMBERED EDITION.  English text.  Dreyfus won the 1930 Monaco Grand Prix for Bugatti, also raced and raced for Maserati, Ferrari’s works Alfa Romeo team and  won the 1938 Cork GP in a 4.5-litre V12 factory Delahaye.  Involved himself in U.S. sports car racing post-war and also established his famous Le Chanteclair restaurant in New York.  9x11in.  Mint dustwrapper.  Errata sheet.  pp.180.  Unique signed, numbered item.  £245

1272.    FERRARI MONDIALE.  1975.  Evangelisti and Rancati.  Italian text.  Glossy colour annual publication devoted to the Ferrari F1 team in the world championship.  Ferrari letter with Enzo’s facsimile signature as official preface.  Rated as a continuation of the rare softback Ferrari Yearbooks in the 1950s and 1960s.  In this 1975 season, Niki Lauda won his first World Championship in a Ferrari 312T.  Triple fold-out colour photograph of Lauda at speed.  Softback.  pp96.  £90
1270.    ROLLS-ROYCE & BENTLEY.  A LIVING TRADITION. 1958.  Lavish presentation book on "The Background Story of Current Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars"  by Col. J. R. Buckley.  Text concentrates on the traditional high standards of engineering and craftsmanship at Crewe. Pen and wash illustrations throughout and a line drawing of a contemporary Rolls on the endpapers. Hardback with superb dustwrapper, presented in a decorative slip case. 9in x 9in. pp.35   £75
1269.    GOODWOOD Member's Sports Car meeting, 26 March 1955.  Original programme for this BARC race day. Race details, entry and driver lists, circuit map, speed table etc. A little creased (it probably spent the day in someone's pocket 50 years ago)  and some ticks written against driver's names, otherwise clean and intact with no tears etc. 5.5in x 8.5in pp.15      £15
1265.    MONACO GRAND PRIX 1937.  Sweepstake ticket from the 9th Monaco Grand Prix. Beautiful engraved  item on thin tissue-like paper with details of the draw (top prize 2 million francs) in French and English. Still with counterfoil so I guess there's no chance of claiming a prize now. 5.5in x 2.5in approx.  £80

1264.   THE THREE-POINTED STAR. The Story of Mercedes Benz. David Scott Montcrieff.  I can offer two volumes of this excellent book which has become one of the standard works on Mercedes Benz. Both Hardbacks in good condition with similar dustwrappers Illustrated.

1264a.    1955 first edition owned by John Morley and containing his bookplate, plus signature and date on a piece of his notepaper.  Also inside is  a Brooklands Society Christmas card from film maker Bill Mason with a note referring to "the film with Largenburg". 5.5in x 8.5in  pp.360  excellent dustwrapper in plastic sleeve protector. £40

1261.     MOTOR. SVENSKA AUTOMOBILKLUBBENS OFFICIELLA ORGAN 1906.   A pair of copies of the Swedish Automobile Club magazine which appears to have been weekly. 1204. MEXICO OR BUST!  Mark Kahn. The 1970 World Cup Rally as a first-hand account from a competitor. Kahn joined Peter Jopp and Willy Cave in a BMC 1800 driving across Europe as far as Belgrade and Sofia, before turning towards Lisbon. The Rally continued in Rio de Janeiro and ran to Buenos Aires before turning North and running all the way up South America, through Panama to finish in Mexico City. Great photographs. In typical Automobile Quarterly style, there are lavish photographs and double page spreads depicting all aspects of Lincoln cars from early 'twenties models through to the (then) new Continental Mark III of 1968. A beautiful book and a great collector's piece of Lincoln literature. Softback 72 pages 8 x 10.5 in approx. 1045.    FERRARI POSTCARD -- Pat Hoare/ Ferrari Dino Formula Libre.  Published by Shell in New Zealand for fanmail, this rarity has a b&w illustration of Hoare at speed in the actual Dino driven by Phil Hill to win the last Grand Prix to be won by a front-engined car -- the 1960 Italian GP at Monza.  The car was then fitted with a 3-litre Testa Rossa V12 engine for the New Zealand series.  Hoare's success in 1961/62 include wins at Renwick, Dunedin and Ohakea.  He was NZ Champion in 1961/62.  Specifications and facsimile signature on reverse.  £25

957.    GREAT NAMES IN MOTOR RACING.  Souvenir postal covers with postmarks.  Colour art of drivers on envelopes containing sets of cards charting each driver's career plus photographs with facsimile signatures.  Each postal cover has an ORIGINAL signature by the driver in question.  The Great Names in Motor Racing series was produced in around 1979.  Looking at the postmarks I'd say many of the cards were sent from each driver's home town so they not only signed them, but posted them too! 6.5 x 4.5 in.

953a.    FERRARI / The Prancing Horse.  Del Cavallino Rampante.  Fascinating First Day Cover with colour art of Cortese winning Ferrari's first race in 1947, with a Lockheed P38 flying overhead linking the prancing horse with the Italian Air Force and Ferrari.  A printed sheet in the envelope provide a detailed history of Francesco Baracca whose Squadriglia carried the prancing horse as their banner in WW1.  Following is death in action, his mother presented Enzo Ferrari with the prancing horse badge suggesting that it might bring him luck.  This first day cover was carried in an Italian Air Force Starfighter which overflew Ferrari at Modena on the 50th anniversary of the first Ferrari victory.  Ferrari on special Goodwood Festival of Speed postmark (20 June 97) for the Isle of Man Philatelic Bureau.  20p Isle of Man stamp features Reg Parnell in a 4CLT Maserati (!) in 1951.  8.5 x 4.5 in. £35
